MICRO-CAMERA COMPOSITE FOCAL PLANE ARRAY IMAGING (CFPA)

The micro-camera CFPA approach enables a scalable, low cost, and lightweight packaging approach to low-light wide area day/night passive persistent surveillance imaging systems.  The AQT solution employs the use of a micro-camera CFPA, where the CFPA’s building blocks are micro-cameras--- FPA’s with integrated micro-optics.


Conventional systems with large aperture, high resolution, and wide field-of-view imaging make the lens system heavy and costly.  Furthermore, the large FPA is expensive and difficult to manufacture. Composite focal plane arrays (CFPAs) address the FPA challenges by using a mosaic of FPAs to reduce the manufacturing costs involved in large format FPAs. Two well-known CFPA approaches are a stitched CFPA, where the mosaic is constructed by butting a mosaic of specialty FPAs with minimal perimeter regions in direct contact, and an overlapped CFPA, where the mosaic uses more standard FPAs with significant perimeter regions but has multiple apertures to compensate for the gaps between the FPAs. While both these approaches are able to provide low-light capabilities, they do not scale well to low-cost, lightweight solutions.
